AI Solution Overview:

Duolingo’s first AI project, the Spaced Repetition System, was able to predict how long users would retain words in their memory, adjusting lessons based on their retention patterns. 

Building on this, Duolingo developed BirdBrain, a ML model that predicts a user’s likelihood of getting a question wrong before they even attempt it. BirdBrain adjusts the difficulty of exercises in real-time based on user performance, creating a highly personalized learning experience. It continuously improves by training on approximately 500 million lessons daily.

Additionally, the Smart Tips feature uses natural language processing (NLP) to identify and explain specific mistakes in real-time, providing users with immediate feedback and tips.

The platform’s Regression Model analyzes error patterns across millions of users to refine content delivery, ensuring each user receives the most relevant and effective learning material. 

To enhance conversational skills, Duolingo integrates AI-powered chatbots that simulate real-life language conversations. These chatbots not only help users practice speaking but also evolve and improve with the growing data from user interactions, making the learning experience more realistic and effective.

The system was further improved with the integration of GPT-4, leading to the development of Duolingo Max. This premium tier introduces AI-driven features such as ‘Explain My Answer’ and ‘Roleplay,’ which help users better understand their mistakes and practice conversational skills.
