AI to Autonomously Detect and Engage High-value Targets

Summary:

Without human intervention, the Switchblade 600 successfully identified and destroyed the Russian “Tor” surface-to-air missile. The AI software enables real-time target recognition, reducing engagement time and increasing mission success rates.

Client:

Government of Ukraine (Ministry of Defense)

Problem Statement:

The surface-to-air missile systems like the “Tor” are highly mobile and difficult to detect and neutralize using traditional strike methods. Human-operated drone systems face latency issues in dynamic combat environments, increasing the risk of missed engagements. There was a need for an autonomous, AI-driven solution to rapidly identify and eliminate such threats.

Results:

  • Successful THOR Neutralization: The Shark UAV detected the THOR system, relayed data to the Switchblade 600, which then autonomously engaged and destroyed the target.
  • Reduced Operator Burden: AI automation allows human operators to focus on strategic decisions rather than manual targeting.

AI Solution Overview:

The Switchblade 600, a loitering munition developed by AeroVironment, has been enhanced with AI to autonomously detect and engage high-value targets.

Designed to neutralize hardened and armored targets at extended ranges, it features:

  • High-definition electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) gimbaled sensors for superior targeting accuracy.
  • 40+ minutes of flight endurance, enabling prolonged area surveillance and rapid engagement.
  • An anti-armor warhead optimized for high-value, heavily protected threats.
